Lighting has a huge impact on how your garden suite feels day to day.
In a smaller home, the right lighting choices and window placement make the space feel larger and more comfortable. The wrong choices can leave it feeling dark and overly reliant on artificial light.
Here’s how we approach window placement and lighting plans in our garden suites, including what we’re recommending to the Hazeldean garage suite homeowners.
Maximizing Natural Light for a Bright Garden Suite
One of the most effective ways to improve a garden suite’s ambience and functionality is also one of the simplest: bring in as much natural light as possible.
Because Edmonton is in the northern hemisphere, south-facing windows receive the most consistent sunlight throughout the day, which is especially important in winter when daylight is limited. Designing window placement with this in mind keeps the suite brighter for longer, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.
We aim to include windows on multiple sides of the suite whenever possible, but we pay special attention to the south-facing exposure. Even small adjustments in placement can make a noticeable difference in how the suite feels and functions.
Beyond comfort, this also has energy-efficient benefits. More natural light means that the tenant is less reliant on overhead lighting, which helps reduce electricity use over time.
How to Maintain Privacy in your Garden Suite Without Sacrificing Natural Light
One of the most common concerns homeowners have about renting out their garden suite is privacy, for themselves and for their future tenants.
Poor window placement can create awkward sightlines into your backyard, your home, or even neighbouring properties. We take this into account early in the design phase to ensure everyone’s privacy is respected.
A simple and effective solution is narrow transom windows.

These windows are placed higher on the wall, allowing natural light to enter without creating direct lines of sight into private spaces. They’re very useful along property lines, facing neighbouring homes, or in areas where you want light without forsaking privacy.
We’ve used transom windows in our garden suite projects to keep the interiors bright and open and make sure everyone feels comfortable.

Privacy considerations don’t stop at the windows!
We also look closely at how the outdoor spaces, like balconies, interact with the surrounding homes and backyard. In many cases, we recommend using obscure glass for balcony railings instead of spindles or clear glass. This allows light to pass through while keeping the balcony private, so the garage suite tenants can enjoy the outdoor space without creating direct sightlines into neighbouring spaces.
It’s a simple design choice that makes a big difference in day-to-day comfort, especially in Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods where homes are close together.
Layered Lighting: The Key to a Comfortable Small Space
Natural light only gets you so far. In the evenings, good artificial lighting is what makes a space feel calm and cozy.
Instead of relying on a single overhead light, we love to recommend layered lighting plans that combine multiple light sources for different purposes:
- Ambient lighting (general overhead light).
- Task lighting (focused light for cooking, reading, or working).
- Accent lighting (softer lighting for a cozy atmosphere). For example, many of our garage suite floor plans incorporate two large windows in the stairwell at the entrance. We love to add a pendant light to brighten the stairs at night and add a pop of personality to the space.

Layering light helps avoid harsh shadows and makes the space feel larger and more comfortable, which is especially important in a compact layout.
Functional Kitchen Lighting
In a small kitchen, lighting needs to work hard to provide clear visibility for meal prep while creating a warm, inviting glow for the rest of the home.

We often recommend undercabinet lighting, which provides direct light onto countertops for cooking and prep. It also creates a softer, more ambient feel in the evening when the overhead lights are off.
Layered kitchen lighting makes the space feel much more enjoyable to use, and makes you more inclined to cook and spend time with loved ones at home.
Garage Lighting on the Ground Floor
When it comes to the ground level, our design goal is to balance natural light with security. Homeowners can choose whether or not to include windows in the overhead garage door, a decision that often comes down to how they plan to use the space.
If the suite is located in a back-alley, we generally recommend limiting large window openings due to privacy. Instead, we prefer high-placed obscured windows that pull in natural daylight without creating clear sightlines for passersby.
For the Hazeldean garage suite, we installed obscured windows in the overhead door to ensure the ground floor felt like an extension of the suite rather than a dark utility space.

What’s Next for the Hazeldean Garage Suite
With the structure complete and the building sealed up, we’ve moved into the most exciting phase, the interior finishes!
Watch our new video to see the exciting room we’ve built in the ground floor: a custom exercise studio designed for the homeowners’ workouts and yoga practice.
On the second floor, cabinetry installation and vinyl plank flooring has been completed, and our tile partners have started tiling the bathroom and kitchen backsplash. The homeowners have chosen a unique design in the bathroom: tiling across the floor, walls, and ceiling using three distinct tiles, which will bring a lot of character to the space.
From there, we’ll move into the final details like adding door levers and installing light fixtures throughout the suite and the railings along the stairs and the balcony.
